"O LORD, our God, save us from his hand"
Text: Isaiah 37:20
THE PRAYER OF HEZEKIAH II
Hezekiah’s prayer is highly instructive and insightful. His prayer was humble and heartfelt. Judah was desperately in need of the LORD’ mercy!
“Truly, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands,
and have cast their gods into the fire;
for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands—wood and stone.
Therefore they destroyed them. Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the LORD, You alone.”
Isaiah 37:18-20
1. The kings of Assyria.
a) The Assyrian forces were made up of many kings.
b) Sennacherib was the leading king at this point of time.
2. The deeds of the Assyrians.
a) They had laid waste many nations and their lands.
b) They had indeed destroyed idols.
c) These were not gods at all.
d) The idols were made of wood and stone.
e) Thus, the Assyrians had been able to destroy “these gods”.
f) The Rabshakeh had boasted in vain about the “gods”
that had been destroyed by the Assyrians.
3. A prayer for Deliverance.
a) Hezekiah appealed to “the LORD our God”.
b) He pleaded with the LORD to save them from the Assyrians.
c) His focus was that all the kingdoms of the earth may know:
i) That the LORD is indeed God!
ii) That He is the only One who may be called God!
