"His awesome work"

Text: Isaiah 28:21

THE AWESOME WORK OF GOD

Judah had forgotten the works of God recorded in the Scriptures. Isaiah reminded the nation of two famous works of the LORD.

“For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim,
He will be angry as in the Valley of Gibeon—
That He may do His work, His awesome work,
And bring to pass His act, His unusual act.
Now therefore, do not be mockers,
Lest your bonds be made strong;
For I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts,
A destruction determined even upon the whole earth.”
Isaiah 28:21-22

1. Mount Perazim (2 Samuel 5:17-25)

a) David had conquered Jerusalem, a city of the Jebusites then.

b) The Philistines mounted an attack on David.

c) David inquired of the LORD if he should battle the Philistines.

d) The LORD answered in the affirmative and David won a great victory.

e) This battle was called “Baal Perazim”.

f) Meaning: “The LORD will break through”.

g) The LORD rose up against the Philistines and defeated them through David.

2. The Valley of Gibeon (Joshua 10)

a) This story goes all the way back to the days of Joshua.

b) There was a major battle with the Amorites.

c) Joshua cried out to the LORD to cause the sun and moon to stand still
till the Amorites were thoroughly defeated.

3. A special work of God.

a) It was called “His awesome work”.

b) “His unusual act”.

4. The mockers of God

a) They did not believe in God.

b) They mocked the Bible stories about God.

c) They were admonished.

5. Destruction from God forewarned.

a) Isaiah had a message from the LORD of hosts.

b) This message was about “the destruction” that God had determined
upon the whole earth.

c) This would be an “awesome” and “unusual act” of the LORD.
