Day 84

"Will send leanness among his fat ones"

Text: Isaiah 10:16

THE POWER OF THE LORD

The king of Assyria was not fully cognizant of the power of the LORD. In his foolishness and arrogance, he believed that he was the mightiest man alive. He was very wrong in his assessment.

“Shall the axe boast itself against him who chops with it?
Or shall the saw exalt itself against him who saws with it?
As if a rod could wield itself against those who lift it up,
Or as if a staff could lift up, as if it were not wood!
Therefore the Lord, the Lord of hosts,
Will send leanness among his fat ones;
And under his glory
He will kindle a burning
Like the burning of a fire.”
Isaiah 10:15-16

1. The axe and the saw

a) They were used to cut down mighty trees.

b) They were formidable tools of power.

2. The person who wields the axe and the saw.

a) He is far greater than the axe and the saw.

b) God was the One who was the master of the tools and not the king of Assyria.

3. The rod and the staff

a) They were mere pieces of wood.

b) The One who wields them is the LORD Himself not the Assyrian king.

4. The actions that God would take against the king of Assyria.

a) The king boasted about his wealth.

b) The LORD would send leanness to the nation.

c) Assyria would be conquered one day and many would experience poverty.

d) God would set a fire that would destroy the vast Assyrian empire.

e) The glory of the Assyrians would be burned up completely.

f) This is the penalty that the LORD would mete out to Assyria.

g) It never pays to be arrogant in life.
