Isaiah

Day 3

"A people laden with iniquity"

Text: Isaiah 1:4

A SAD DESCRIPTION

This was an honest but really sad description of the spiritual state of the land of Judah. Under King Uzziah, the land had become very prosperous. But spiritually, the nation was in tatters!

“Alas, sinful nation,
A people laden with iniquity,
A brood of evildoers,
Children who are corrupters!
They have forsaken the LORD,
They have provoked to anger
The Holy One of Israel,
They have turned away backward.”
Isaiah 1:4

1. The spiritual state of the nation:

a) It was a lamentably “sinful nation”.

i) This was not a description of a small group of people.

ii) This was a description of the vast majority of the nation.

b) The people were described as:

i) “Laden with iniquity”

ii) “A brood of evildoers”

iii) They were horribly corrupt people.

2. How had Judah become so spiritually destitute?

a) They had forsaken the LORD.

i) They had not been faithful.

ii) They had given up their faith in God.

b) They had provoked the LORD to anger.

i) This provocation came about when the nation had abandoned their faith in God.

ii) Instead, they had chosen to worship idols.

iii) They had turned away from God, the Holy One of Israel.

iv) They had turned away backwards from the LORD.
