"Let us reason together"

Text: Isaiah 1:18

A GREAT INVITATION FROM THE LORD

The LORD’s grace and mercy are as high as the heavens! This was a message of great love and compassion given to a greatly sinful nation!

“‘Come now, and let us reason together,’
Says the LORD,
‘Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool.
If you are willing and obedient,
You shall eat the good of the land;
But if you refuse and rebel,
You shall be devoured by the sword’;
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
Isaiah 1:18-20

1. The offer of reasoning together:

a) The LORD could have just handed out His divine judgment.

i) The nation had sinned grievously against the LORD.

ii) If they were to be punished, no one could speak against God’s justice.

b) The LORD offered an opportunity to Israel:

i) To converse with Him.

ii) To reason with Him.

c) A most glorious offer.

i) Scarlet sins would be cleansed and the heart made as white as snow.

ii) Crimson sins would be washed and they shall be as fresh wool.

2. Much depends on the human response.

a) If the people were willing to become obedient:

i) These would be good indications of true repentance.

ii) These actions would lead to God’s blessings.

iii) The people would continue to eat the good of the land.

b) If the people refused God’s offer and chose rebellion instead:

i) They would perish.

ii) They would be devoured by the sword of the enemy.

3. “The mouth of the LORD has spoken”

a) This was a message from the LORD.

b) This was a well-reasoned word from God.

c) It would also be His decree.

d) The people must choose:

i) To heed the LORD and obey His voice.

ii) To refuse the LORD and therefore face the peril of being overcome by the enemy.
