"The names of the Baals"

Text: Hosea 2:17

THE APPLICATION OF THE NAME BAAL

The name of Baal was used widely. This was one of the ways in which Baal cult was spread.

“For I will take from her mouth the names of the Baals,
And they shall be remembered by their name no more.”
Hosea 2:17

1. “For I will take from her mouth”

a) This will be a special work of God.
b) He will personally see to this problem.
c) He will expunge the use of the name of Baal from the mouth of Israel.

2. “The names of the Baals”

a) Baal worship was wide-spread.
b) Baal was used as a prefix to the various places where Baal was worshipped.
i) Baalah (another name of the city was Kirjath Jearim), a city in Judah (Joshua 15:9).
ii) Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon (Joshua 11:17).

3. How would God remove the name of Baal from Israel’s mouth?

a) When these shrines are destroyed.
b) When Baal has failed to answer the prayers of the nation.
c) When Baal is proven to be a false deity.
d) When Israel returns to God in repentance and is renewed in its relationship with God.

4. “And they shall be remembered by their name no more”

a) Remembering
i) When there is active worship.
ii) When these shrines are promoted by priests and devotees.
b) Not remembering any more
i) When these shrines fall into disuse.
ii) When enemies come into Israel and destroys its altars.
c) When memories of Baal worship bring:
i) Shame
ii) Pain
iii) Loss (of life and property)
