"Gomer the daughter of Diblaim"

Text: Hosea 1:3

A MARRIAGE EXPERIENCE

Sometimes, a prophet had to go through difficulties in order to understand the message that he proclaims. The messages are that much more real and impactful when the difficult experiences of life are faced.

“So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim,
and she conceived and bore him a son.”
Hosea 1:3.

1. Marriage was not allowed in the case of Jeremiah

a) Jeremiah was specifically told not to marry (Jeremiah 16:2).
b) This is not to be seen as a call to practise celibacy.
i) This was a command that was given to Jeremiah specifically.
ii) The mercy and the wisdom of the Lord shown to Jeremiah must be noted.
c) The grave situations in the life circumstances of Jeremiah:
i) People will experience “gruesome deaths” (Jeremiah 16:4).
ii) Many would be “consumed by the sword and by famine” (Jeremiah 16:4).
iii) The dead bodies would not even be given decent burials (Jeremiah 16:4).
iv) “Their corpses shall be meat for the birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth.” (Jeremiah 16:4)

2. Hosea’s marriage to Gomer

a) Marriages were often arranged.
i) Matchmakers were in demand.
ii) Both families would try and ensure that they would have a good match.
b) Initially the marriage went well.
c) There was no indication that things would turn out badly.
d) But the Lord’s prophetic word to Hosea was still a sobering thought that could not be easily dismissed.

3. “And she conceived and bore him a son”

a) To have children
i) Normal.
ii) The firstborn son would be a special source of joy to the parents and relatives.
b) Sons in a Jewish family
i) Sons were prized for they would perpetuate the family’s name.
ii) The firstborn son would receive an extra portion of inheritance.
