"Not that He should offer Himself often..."

Text: Hebrews 9:25

ANOTHER COMPARISON

Another important comparison was made in the following text. These comparisons are important for they help us appreciate the significance of Christ’s sacrifice for us.

“Not that He should offer Himself often,
as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place
every year with blood of another-“
Hebrews 9:25

1. As the high priest

a) The Aaronic high priesthood is in mind here.
b) The privilege of entering into the Most Holy Place in the earthly tabernacle was extended only to the high priest.
c) This exclusive privilege was extended to him just once a year.
d) He could only enter into the Most Holy Place with the “blood of another”.
i) This is a reference to animal sacrifice.
ii) He has to make atonement for his own sins.
iii) Only then could he make atonement for the sins of the nation.

2. Not that He should offer Himself often

a) This is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) As High Priest He too needed to make atonement.
c) He made just one atoning sacrifice- He presented Himself as the Lamb of God.
d) There was no need to “offer Himself often”.
e) His single sacrifice of Himself as the perfect Lamb of God was fully sufficient for Him to enter into the heavenly Most Holy Place.

AN APPRECIATION OF THE PERFECT SACRIFICE OF CHRIST

Let us appreciate the perfect sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ! The danger of taking for granted the sacrifice of our Saviour is all too real! Let us stand in great awe and appreciation of the significance of Christ’s supreme sacrifice for us!
