"For this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant..."

Text: Hebrews 9:15

MEDIATOR OF THE NEW COVENANT

The following text must qualify as one of the most profound texts in the Book of Hebrews! How we must appreciate and treasure our glorious Saviour!

“And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant,
by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions
under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive
the promise of the eternal inheritance.”
Hebrews 9:15

1. And for this reason He is the mediator of the new covenant

a) Only Jesus can be the mediator between God and man.
b) Jesus is the perfect Mediator of the new covenant.

2. By means of death

a) By virtue of His sacrificial death He became the Mediator.
b) By virtue of who He is Jesus is the Mediator in the new covenant.

3. For the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant

a) Transgressions under the first covenant could only be symbolically cleansed.
b) All transgressions can only be fully cleansed through the blood of Jesus.

4. Those who are called

a) A reference to all who believe in God through Jesus the Mediator.
b) The calling appreciated:-
i) As Abraham was graciously called to a wonderful inheritance.
ii) As Moses was graciously called to serve.
iii) So we are called by God to receive redemption in Christ.

5. The promise of the eternal inheritance

The “good things” to come (Hebrews 9:11) must be a reference to “the promise of the eternal inheritance”. How we must stand in awe of a great God who planned such a glorious redemptive plan for a sinful world!
