"It was symbolic for the present time..."

Text: Hebrews 9:9

GREAT SYMBOLIC VALUE

How should one understand the ancient Tabernacle worship system? Let us ponder this word.

“It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts
and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed
the service perfect in regard to the conscience-“
Hebrews 9:9

1. It was symbolic (Greek “parabole”)

a) The Tabernacle had great symbolic value.
b) Every aspect of the Tabernacle worship offered significant symbolic meaning.

2. For the present time

a) The present time must refer to the New Covenant age.
b) Gifts and sacrifices
i) These had symbolic meaning.
ii) They were part of a worship that acknowledged God.
iii) Gratitude and thanksgiving are expressed appropriately in gifts and sacrifices.

3. Cannot make him who performed the service perfect

a) No matter how many times the high priest and priests performed their services they could not be made perfect.
b) In the same token the worshippers cannot be made perfect no matter how many times they offered gifts and sacrifices.

4. In regard to the conscience

a) The conscience cannot be made pure and perfect through animal sacrifices or monetary gifts.
b) The Tabernacle worship could only go so far and no more.
c) A better system must be found!
