Day 188

"The LORD has sworn and will not relent..."

Text: Hebrews 7:21

THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK

A powerful contrast was made between the order of Melchizedek and the Levitical priesthood. The following text highlights this clearly.

“And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath…
But He with an oath by Him who said to Him:
‘The LORD has sworn and will not relent,
You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.'”
Hebrews 7:20-21

1. He was not made priest without an oath

a) This differentiated the order of Melchizedek from the Levitical priesthood.
b) No oath was given to the Levitical priesthood.

2. With an oath by Him who said to Him

a) The first “Him” is a reference to the LORD of hosts.
b) The second “Him” is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.

3. The content of the oath must be studied carefully

a) The LORD has sworn
i) This is a declaration of an oath made.
ii) This oath was recorded in the Psalms (Cf. Psalm 110:4).
b) And will not relent
i) This is a word of strong confirmation.
ii) This oath is fully binding.
c) You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek
i) The ministry of Jesus as High Priest is meant to last “forever”.
ii) In contrast, the ministry of the Levitical priesthood was temporary.
iii) The order of Melchizedek was specifically mentioned to avoid any possible misunderstanding or misapplication.
