"The bringing in of a better hope..."

Text: Hebrews 7:19

ON THE ONE HAND

The author of Hebrews did not intend to destroy the significance of the law that God gave to Moses and the children of Israel, when he wrote these words.

“For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former
commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness,
for the law made nothing perfect…”
Hebrews 7:18-19a

He merely pointed out that the law had been grossly misunderstood. There were obvious limitations to the law that could not be ignored! Blind loyalty to the law without a deeper comprehension of God’s greater plan would have disastrous consequences.

ON THE OTHER HAND

What was God’s greater plan if the law was going to be annulled? Let us ponder the following text.

“On the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope,
through which we draw near to God.”
Hebrews 7:19b

1. The bringing in of a better hope

a) The annulment of the “former commandment” need not result in despair.
b) God had given “a better hope”.
c) The elements of “hope”:-
i) There must be knowledge of God’s word.
ii) There must be faith in the promises of God found in His word.
iii) There must be a new confession of faith and hope in God.

2. Through which we draw near to God

a) The “former commandments” did not often cause people to draw near to God.
i) There was always that dread of failing to keep His laws.
ii) There was always that fear of judgment and condemnation.
b) Drawing near to God

This is a truly welcome alternative! True religion must cause a person to be drawn nearer to God!
