"By reason of use have their senses exercised"

Text: Hebrews 5:14b

HOW MAY SPIRITUAL GROWTH BE ACHIEVED?

Every believer should desire good and strong spiritual growth! The following text offers us an important glimpse of how this growth may be achieved.

“But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is,
those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern
both good and evil.”
Hebrews 5:14

1. Solid food

The believer committed to growing must consider the following:-

a) He must desire to grow from being a spiritual infant to a mature Christian adult.
b) He must plan to have a strong diet of good solid food.

2. Full Age

The believer must note the (spiritual) rites of passage, where spiritual growth is concerned:-

a) Stage of spiritual infancy where only milk is consumed.
b) Stage of spiritual maturity where solid food is consumed.

3. The process

a) Skill in handling the word of righteousness must be acquired (Hebrews 5:13)
b) He must train his spiritual senses

This is the meaning behind the phrase “by reason of use”:-

i) He must be prepared to do all that is necessary to achieve spiritual maturity.
ii) He must learn diligence from the Scriptures and cultivate discernment.
iii) He must always seek to distinguish between “good and evil”.
iv) He must ever put into practice his knowledge of God.

IT TAKES DILIGENT WORK TO OBTAIN SPIRITUAL MATURITY

The road to significant spiritual maturity is most challenging, but this goal is achievable. The alternative of remaining in spiritual infancy is unthinkable. We have every reason to feel motivated to work at becoming spiritually mature.
