IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS OF BELIEVERS

There are a number of important characteristics that should mark a genuine believer. We must speak of “characteristics” because they are vital “trademarks” of the Christian. Let us consider some of these characteristics:

1. From the teachings of Jesus

a) The believer must live in obedience to the Word of God.

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by
every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4

b) The believer must be marked by love.

“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if
you have love for one another.”
John 13:35

2. From the teachings of Peter

a) The believer must be characterized by holiness.

“Because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.'”
1 Peter 1:16

b) The believer must be prepared to walk in the footsteps of Jesus- including suffering.

“For to this you were called, because Christ also
suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you
should follow His steps.”
1 Peter 2:21

3. From the teachings of Paul

a) The believer must have the mind of Christ (genuine humility).

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ
Jesus…”
Philippians 2:5

b) The believer must display the fruit of the Spirit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness , self-control. Against such there is
no law.”
Galatians 5:22-23

4. From the teachings of the author of Hebrews: Obedience
The author of Hebrews has this to add to the characteristics of true believers.

“To all who obey Him…”
Hebrews 5:9c

Paul would agree to this emphasis on “obedience”. He himself wrote:

“Through Him we have received grace and apostleship
for obedience to the faith…”
Romans 1:5

Let us seek to cultivate these characteristics in our life!
