Hebrews
Day
Day 85

Not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.

Text: Hebrews 4:2

HOW SHOULD THE WORD OF GOD BE RECEIVED?

We have some very wonderful examples of how some received the word of God when it was preached to them.

1. The Samaritans when they heard Jesus preach.

“And many more believed because of His own word.”
John 4:41

2. The Jews who heard the gospel preached by Peter.

“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized”
Acts 2:41

“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine
and fellowship”
Acts 2:42

3. The Thessalonians who heard the word preached by Paul and his team.

“For this reason we also thank God without ceasing,
because when you received the word of God which you
heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men,
but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively
works in you who believe.”
1 Thessalonians 2:13

THE NEED TO RECEIVE THE WORD OF GOD ARIGHT

The danger that menaces all who hear the word of God is stated clearly in this text.

“Not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.”
Hebrews 4:2c

1. The hearer must apply his faith when he hears the word of God.

2. He must recognize that ultimately it is the voice of the Lord whose word is proclaimed.

3. He must decide the following:-

a) That the word of God is true.
b) That His word is to be received appropriately- in faith!

Closely associated with faith are the following elements:-

i) Search for Understanding
ii) Feeling of deep gratitude
iii) A spirit of determination to keep the Word given
iv) A strong desire to comply to its demands
v) A genuine love for the Word
