The throne of grace...

Text: Hebrews 4:16

THE THRONE OF GOD

The concept of the throne of God was first mentioned in the following text.

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.”
Hebrews 1:8

Closely associated with the idea of a “throne” is the royal crown.

“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than
the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with
glory and honour, that He, by the grace of God,
might taste death for everyone.”
Hebrews 2:9

1. Essential features of this Throne (Cf. Hebrews 1:8)

a) It is a an everlasting throne.

It will last “forever and ever”.

b) It is a Divine throne

The One who sits on the throne is addressed as “God”.

2. Identification of the enthroned King

a) He is identified by His scepter (symbol of His kingship).
b) He is identified further by “glory and honour” (Cf. Hebrews 2:9)
c) The clearest identification is by naming the King- He is none other than “Jesus”.

THE THRONE OF GRACE

The following text reveals for us an additional feature of this throne.

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace…”
Hebrews 4:16

Jesus plays two very significant roles in this passage (Hebrews 4:14-16).

1. He is our royal and Divine King.

2. He is also our great High Priest.

3. His throne is especially characterized by “grace”.

What an uplifting portrayal of Jesus as both King and High Priest! When we conclude our prayers “In Jesus’ name” let us remember that He is both King and Priest!
