Day 348

"Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive..."

Text: Hebrews 13:17

TWO REFERENCES TO SPIRITUAL LEADERS

The writer made two separate references to how the believer should relate to those who have spiritual oversight. The first reference may be recalled.

“Remember those who rule over you,
who have spoken the word of God to you,
whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.”
Hebrews 13:7

The second reference to relationship to spiritual leaders is found in the following text:-

“Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive,
for they watch out for your souls, as those who must
give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief,
for that would be unprofitable for you.”
Hebrews 13:17

ON AN EVEN STRONGER NOTE

A second admonition was deemed necessary! Stronger words were utilized to drive home vital truths about how to relate to spiritual leaders!

1. The idea behind the word “rule” (“hegoumenois” same root word).

a) The more effective word is “to lead”.
b) God’s spiritual leaders do His work by “leading” the flock.

2. The work entrusted to these spiritual leaders by the Lord:-

a) They speak (teach) the word of God (Hebrews 13:7b).
b) Their faith is well-displayed (Hebrews 13:7c).
c) Their faith-conduct is also noted (Hebrews 13:7d).
d) They watch over souls (Hebrews 13:17b).

3. Accountability to God

a) All souls are accountable to God.
b) All leaders practise a consciousness of accountability to God (Hebrews 13:7c).
These statements were written as strong reminders to all believers and leaders!
