"Let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise..."

Text: Hebrews 13:15

THE WORSHIP WE OFFER GOD TODAY

In the Old Testament the worship of God revolved around the concept of “animal sacrifice”. In the New Testament there would now be a distinct change. The old sacrificial system was rendered obsolete through the perfect sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. How then may we offer worship to God today? The following text offers a great answer.

“Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise
to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.”
Hebrews 13:15

1. Therefore by Him

a) All worship must go through the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) “By Him” is absolutely correct!
i) By His shed blood we are redeemed.
ii) By His Mediation we offer our prayers to God.
iii) By Him we enter into the Holy of Holies.

2. Let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise

a) The sacrifice of praise must remind us of how offerings were made according to Levitical laws.
i) The law of sacrifice of peace demands that it must be made with “the sacrifice of thanksgiving” (Cf. Leviticus 7:12).
ii) The emphasis on “thanksgiving” is unmistakable (Cf. Leviticus 7:12, 13, 15).
b) The New Testament concept is well understood and supported by other writers like the apostle Paul (Cf. Ephesians 5:19-20)! Worship must always include “the sacrifice of praise”.

3. The fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name

a) The giving of thanks to God is not limited to worship!
b) The giving of thanks should be “the fruit of our lips”!
c) Giving thanks to God should be the most natural thing a believer does every day!
