"Looking unto Jesus..."

Text: Hebrews 12:2

THE RACE OF LIFE

How would you describe life? The author of Hebrews offers this description of life. He sees it as a race.

“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.”
Hebrews 12:1c-2a

1. Training

a) Every runner must train in order to run his race well.
b) He knows that he must lay aside whatever would hinder him.
i) He must put away “weights”.
ii) He must deal with “sins”.

2. Endurance

a) This is most needed.
b) Endurance does not come easily.
c) It comes through regular training.

3. The race set before us

a) The race of life is better understood as a marathon than a sprint.
b) We have no choice about running this race of life; we must plan to succeed in running this race well.

4. Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith

a) Every runner looks forward to the finishing line.
b) He draws encouragement from the supporters, “the great cloud of witnesses”.
c) Most of all he must learn how to look unto Jesus for inspiration.
d) Jesus the great “Author and Finisher of our faith” must serve as a powerful source of encouragement to our hearts.
