"Quenched the violence of fire..."

Text: Hebrews 11:34

MORE EXPLOITS OF FAITH

The author of Hebrews went on to describe feats that were accomplished through the exercise of faith!

“Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword,
out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle,
turned to flight the armies of the aliens.”
Hebrews 11:34

1. Quenched the violence of fire

The three friends of Daniel were thrown into a fiery furnace because they refused to bow to the statue of Nebuchadnezzar. However they escaped certain death because of their faith in God! (Cf. Daniel 3:19-30).

2. Escaped the edge of the sword

A number of people may be mentioned. David escaped the sword of king Saul a number of times. His faith in the Lord saw him seeking the Lord in prayer. In direct answer to his prayers of faith, the Lord helped David escape the edge of the sword (Cf. 1 Samuel 18-19).

3. Out of weakness were made strong

Numerous people felt that they were too young, too inexperienced, too weak to serve the Lord. But their faith enabled them to become strong (e.g. Moses, Gideon, Jeremiah).

4. Became valiant in battle

Many were the battles Israel fought in ancient times. David was supported by many mighty men who proved themselves valiant in battle (Cf. 1 Chronicles 11).

5. Turned to flight the armies of the aliens

The prophets of God provide clear examples of what faith can accomplish:-

a) Elijah was indeed “father of Israel” for his faith helped Israel to defeat the mighty Syrian army in the days of king Ahab (Cf. 1 Kings 20).
b) Elisha turned back the army of Moab in the days of king Jehoshaphat (Cf. 2 Kings 3).
c) Isaiah and king Hezekiah prayed in faith and turned back the mighty army of Sennacherib, king of Assyria (Cf. 2 Chronicles 32).
The above feats are not small accomplishments! How could these things have been achieved? There was no other way but to call upon Divine help! What would bring about God’s assistance? The answer is only too obvious! Faith in God was the key to attempting and accomplishing great feats!
