"By faith Moses..."

Text: Hebrews 11:23

A TRULY MIGHTY HERO OF FAITH

The author of Hebrews went on to focus his attention on the life and faith of Moses. He was absolutely right to have singled out Moses as one who possessed an exceptional faith in God.

A NEEDED WORD OF EXPLANATION

The following text needs a word of explanation.

“By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months
by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child;
and they were not afraid of the king’s command.”
Hebrews 11:23

1. By faith Moses, when he was born

a) The phrase “by faith” was a literary term used frequently in Hebrews 11.
b) The phrase does not actually describe the faith of Moses when he was born (He would not be capable of having cognitive faith of any kind).
c) The phrase “By faith” suggests the fact that faith was exercised by his parents when Moses was born.

2. Was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child

a) The parents of Moses noted his beauty.
b) They felt that they had to disobey the Pharaoh’s decree to slay all male children.
c) Faith played a part in this decision to defy Pharaoh.

3. And they were not afraid of the king’s command

a) There were parents who slew their male offspring because they feared for their own lives.
b) Faith in God enabled Moses’ parents to become “not afraid of the king’s command”.
c) As best they could, they kept him hidden for three months (Cf. Exodus 2:2).
d) And after that they put him into a special basket in a river (Cf. Exodus 2:3), with his older sister keeping watch over him.

God’s blessing became most obvious in Moses’ life. He always honours faith!
