"Waited for the city...whose builder and maker is God."

Text: Hebrews 11:10

A REMARKABLE FAITH

There is no question about the fact that the faith of Abraham was remarkable! The following text adds an even more astonishing insight.

“For he waited for the city which has foundations,
whose builder and maker is God.”
Hebrews 11:10

1. For he waited

a) This phrase describes how Abraham related to God.
b) He “waited” on the Lord.
i) The concept of waiting upon the Lord is well taught in the Scriptures.
ii) It involves much faith and trust in God to honour His promise given.
iii) It involves a literal time dimension of “waiting”.

2. Waited for the city which has foundations

a) God gave Abraham a great promise (Cf. Genesis 12, 15).
b) There is no doubt that this promise involved the physical land of Canaan.
c) Nevertheless the faith of Abraham enabled him to see beyond the promise of a physical land.
d) The physical land was not the focus of Abraham (though he was not ungrateful for the promise given to him of the land of Canaan).
e) Abraham’s faith enabled him to look forward to “the city which has foundations”.
f) This statement emphasizes an enormous truth!
i) Life on earth is only temporary; hence there are no solid foundations to speak of.
ii) There is another realm of life. Abraham’s faith in God enabled him to catch sight of an eternal city.

3. Whose builder and maker is God

Abraham’s faith in God as the builder and maker of that eternal city is remarkable!
