"By faith Noah..."

Text: Hebrews 11:7

CITING A VERY SIGNIFICANT PERSONAGE

Noah was a very significant hero mentioned in the book of Genesis. The following text offers a glowing description of Noah.

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
This is the genealogy of Noah.
Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations.
Noah walked with God.”
Genesis 6:8-9

1. The Genesis text

The following features were highlighted concerning Noah.

a) That he found grace from the Lord.
b) That he was a just man.
c) That he was “perfect” (to be understood as relative to his generation).
d) He walked with God.

2. The Hebrews text

The following text sees the author of Hebrews giving an important insight.

“By faith Noah…” Hebrews 11:7a

a) We have an invaluable insight that Noah possessed faith in the Lord.
b) He had a faith that may well be compared to that of Enoch (he was also described as one who walked with God).

3. The features of faith in Noah’s life

a) His faith in God caused him to desire to live as a “just man”.
b) His faith in the Lord enabled him to be different from all the wicked people who lived in his generation (Cf. Genesis 6:5).
i) The word “perfect” is best read as an antonym to “wickedness” (Cf. Genesis 6:9).
ii) He chose to walk with his Holy God than to walk with sinners.

Noah’s lifestyle reflected a genuine and consistent faith! Hence the writer of Hebrews described him as a man who possessed faith.
