"By faith Enoch... pleased God"

Text: Hebrews 11:5

FALSE UNDERSTANDING ABOUT GOD

There are some who think that the God of the Old Testament was One who was always angry! It seemed as if nothing ever pleased Him! The following text offers a strong rebuttal.

FAITH PLEASES GOD

We have a strong statement about what pleases God in this text.

“By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death,
‘and was not found, because God had taken him’;
for before he was taken he had this testimony,
that he pleased God.”
Hebrews 11:5

1. By faith Enoch…

a) This simple statement teaches us a powerful lesson about Enoch.
b) Ponder the following text that confirms how he lived.

“After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God
three hundred years…”
Genesis 5:22

2. Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death

a) This was the special privilege and distinction that was given to Enoch.
b) He did not die in the usual way man expires.
c) God took him away.

3. And was not found, because God had taken him

a) This suggests that the family and friends of Enoch searched high and low for him.
b) They could find no trace of his whereabouts (no sign of foul play, accident etc).

4. He had this testimony that he pleased God

a) And what a wonderful testimony Enoch had won!
b) He pleased God!
c) God was pleased that he maintained a consistent faith-walk with the Lord for three centuries!
