Hebrews
Day
Day 8

"Sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high."

Text: Hebrews 1:3e

SACRED AND PROFOUND

When we read the Scriptures, we must constantly remind ourselves that we read sacred and profound matters. The best attitude and approach to adopt must be that of humility of spirit. We read humbly, one more time, the following text that so wondrously describes Jesus (No one else fits the description)!

“Who being the brightness of His glory
the express image of His person,
and upholding all things by the word of His power,
when He had by Himself purged our sins,
sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

Hebrews 1:3

A GLORIOUS DESCRIPTION OF JESUS

What an attempt to describe Jesus- in just one verse! How may we best understand how we may appreciate this text? Let us try and get into the mind of the author.

1. One aspect would not do justice

Perhaps the author felt that describing one aspect of Jesus would not do Him justice.

2. Selection of a few choice features

The author felt that he must offer his selection of the features that would best describe Jesus (in a nutshell):-

a) He must be described as possessing all features of Divinity.
b) He must be honoured for His great work of atonement.
c) He must be described as One who now sits at the right hand of God’s majesty.

THE RIGHT HAND OF THE MAJESTY ON HIGH

This description of Jesus echoes the words of Jesus Himself.

“When the Son of Man comes in His glory,
and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit
on the throne of His glory.”

Matthew 25:31

Even before this final scene, Jesus’ place in heaven is well understood and appreciated. Jesus sits at the right hand of God’s majesty on high. This is a description of tremendous glory and power! The pride of place and power is at the right hand of the Majesty on high- and that place is occupied by only One Person who is truly worthy to sit there. Only He who is Lord Divine and Saviour could be described as sitting at the right hand of God Almighty!
