Day 6

"Upholding all things by the word of His power..."

Text: Hebrews 1:3c

WHAT CONSTITUTES “DIVINITY”?

It is probably easier to try and describe the features that describe “humanity” than “divinity”. The author of Hebrews posits three attributes of God that help him discuss and substantiate his concept of “divinity”.

1. He must be the Creator.

2. He must possess Divine glory.

3. He must possess supreme power.

DIFFICULTY IN ACCEPTING JESUS AS DIVINE

The four Gospels recorded a common problem where the Divinity of Christ was concerned:-

1. The multitudes could not fathom how Jesus as a Man could be divine

a) They could accept Jesus as a teacher, a healer and even a prophet.
b) But they found it hard to believe His divinity (Cf. John 6:42, 52, 66)

2. The Jewish religious leaders

a) They rejected any idea that Jesus was Deity (Cf. John 10:33)
b) They persecuted him to death because He laid claim to Divinity.

JESUS POSSESSES ALL FEATURES OF DIVINITY

The author of Hebrews argued strenuously that Jesus possessed all three features of Divinity in the following text.

“Who being the brightness of His glory
and the express image of His person,
and upholding all things by the word of His power?”

Hebrews 1:3

1. Jesus possesses fullness (brightness) of glory.

2. He is the express image of the Person of God.

3. He possesses supreme power.

Jesus is here described as the One who is “upholding all things by the word of His power”!
