Text: Hebrews 1:2

UNDERSTANDING THE PHRASE “THESE LAST DAYS”

In order to understand and appreciate the Book of Hebrews we would need to comprehend the special phrases the author used. One of these phrases is found in the following text.

“Has in these last days spoken to us by His Son…”

Hebrews 1:2a

Two things seemed to be in the mind of the author as he wrote these words:-

1. The time before God spoke through His Son

a) God spoke to individuals such as the patriarchs.
b) God spoke to the prophets
c) The contents of what God spoke were wonderfully preserved in the prophetic writings

2. The time when God spoke through His Son

a) The author made a distinction between speaking through His servants and His Son
i) The prophets were but God’s servants (Cf. Jeremiah 25:4; 26:5)
ii) God now spoke through His Son (Luke 3:22; Matthew 17:5)
b) The author employed the doctrine of “the last days” with reference to Jesus. This concept may be better understood if we enumerate the following thoughts:-
i) The Old Testament prophets spoke of the Day of the Lord (Cf. Zephaniah 1:14; Zechariah 14:1).
ii) This was to be a time of Judgment of all nations.
iii) This period of time was called “the end of the age” (Cf. Matthew 24:3).
iv)) It was also called “the last days” (Cf. Hebrews 1:2)
c) Jesus and “the last days”

The period between the Advent of Jesus (His birth) and His second coming is called “the last days”.
