Day 14

Your throne, O God is forever and ever..."

Text: Hebrews 1:8

A STRONG CHRISTOLOGY

The author of Hebrews obviously possessed a very strong Christology. He was determined to establish the deity of Jesus. By way of declaration and by way of comparative reasoning, he sought to establish that Jesus is truly Deity.

ANOTHER COMPLEX CITATION OF THE SCRIPTURE

Let us ponder the following text prayerfully.

“But to the Son He says:
‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of
Your Kingdom.'”
Hebrews 1:8

1. “Your throne, O God”

a) This text is taken from Psalm 45:6.
b) This is one of the more well-known Messianic Psalms.
c) The understanding of Messianic psalms makes sense only when they are applied to Jesus the Messiah.
d) This text describes the king as “God”.
i) This immediately rules out any reference to earthly kings.
ii) This text is correctly applied to Jesus (“The Son of God”).

2. “Your throne is forever and ever”

a) The throne is a symbol of the seat of regal power.
b) The reign of this God-King is described as “forever and ever”.
c) Automatically this rules out any reference to human kings.
d) This Messianic psalm can only be applied to Jesus. He is both God and King!

3. “A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom”

a) The scepter was an ancient physical symbol of the rule of a king.
b) The scepter of Jesus as King would indeed be well-symbolized by righteousness.
