"You are My Son"

Text: Hebrews 1:5

SONSHIP AND SERVANTHOOD

There is a world of difference between being a son and being a servant! This distinction is easily observable and understood in human society. This fact is also carefully articulated in the second comparison made between Jesus and the angels of God.

“For to which of the angels did He ever say:
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You’?
And again:
‘I will be to Him a Father,
And He shall be to Me a Son”?

Hebrews 1:5

1. Angels themselves recognize two vital things about themselves:-

a) Their honoured position as messengers of God

The angel Gabriel had authority to strike Zacharias with dumbness because his word was not believed (Cf. Luke 1:19-20).

b) Their servanthood

The apostle John was so overawed by what he experienced in heaven that he fell down and worshiped an angel. He was gently instructed to worship only God. The angel declared that he was but a “fellow servant” (Cf. Revelation 22:9).

2. The Sonship of Jesus

This is arguably one of the most complex and profound truths taught in the Scriptures!

a) What Sonship does not mean
i) It does not mean that Jesus is lower than God.
ii) It does not mean that Jesus was a created Being.
b) What Sonship does mean
i) It describes a distinct relationship between the Father and the Son (Equality of Being is a given).
ii) It is a special relationship of the deepest affection.
iii) It is a wondrous relationship of special glory and honour.
iv) It is a unique relationship that not even angels enjoy.
