"I struck you"

Text: Haggai 2:17

THE LORD’S HAND OF CHASTENING

Haggai brought a sobering word from the LORD to the remnant. This was a very solemn word.

“‘I struck you with blight and mildew and hail
in all the labours of your hands;
yet you did not turn to Me,’ says the LORD.”
Haggai 2:17

1. “I struck you”

a) The LORD Himself said these words.
b) He had struck the remnant in all their endeavours.
c) He had not blessed their efforts:
i) They were not “holy” (Haggai 2:12).
ii) They were “unclean” (Haggai 2:14).

2. Three “natural mishaps”

a) Blight
b) Mildew
c) Hail

These could have been interpreted as possible natural events. But in this instance, God had caused these things to occur!

3. “In all the labours of your hands”

a) The farmers were badly affected.
b) The yields were very poor.
c) The remnant returnees were not successful in their endeavours as they hoped.
d) They did not seek the Lord’s blessings.
e) They did not walk in His ways.

4. “‘Yet you did not turn to Me,’ says the LORD”

a) The many problems in their lives should have caused them to seek the Lord.
b) The remnant no longer turned to idols as in the past.
c) But neither did they turn to the Lord.
d) They should have returned to the Lord humbly.
e) They should have sought His forgiveness for having neglected His ways.
The LORD their God would have shown them pity and blessed their efforts!
