"I will fill this temple with glory"

Text: Haggai 2:7

THE GLORY OF GOD PROMISED

Those who had seen the first Temple in its glory bemoaned what they saw at the new Temple. The Lord gave a wonderful prophetic promise.

“For thus says the LORD of hosts:
‘Once more (it is a little while)
I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and the dry land;
and I will shake all nations,
and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations,
and I will fill this temple with glory,’ says the LORD of hosts.”
Haggai 2:6-7

1. “For thus says the LORD of hosts”

a) Once again, this title of the LORD was employed (Haggai 1:5, 7, 9, 14).
b) The greatness and majesty of the Lord was to be understood and appreciated.

2. “Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and the dry land; and I will shake all nations”

a) This expression was used to describe an action that God would perform.
b) God would do something that would be very significant.
c) All nations would be shaken by what God would do!

3. “And they shall come to the Desire of All Nations”

a) This was a prophecy that was deep and profound.
b) Contextually:
i) It had to do with the word “temple”.
ii) The question is which temple?
c) Different opinions have been proffered:
i) Some have suggested that this was a reference to Jerusalem.
ii) Others have suggested that this is a reference to the Third Temple that would be built in time to come (Ezekiel 40-43).
iii) Some have attempted to spiritualize the text and they suggest that this is a reference to the Messiah.

4. “‘And I will fill this temple with glory,’ says the LORD of hosts”

a) The temple that Zerubbabel, Joshua and the remnant were building would not be insignificant.
b) It may not have the glory of the temple built by Solomon.
c) But this second temple would not be devoid of glory. The LORD will fill the Temple with His glory!
