Text: Genesis 25:1-34
ACCORDING TO ALL THAT GOD HAD SAID
Rebekah exercised faith in God, and went away comforted that the Lord would indeed bless her pregnancy, and she would deliver her twins safely. In due time, Rebekah gave birth. Would she really have twins?
“So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth,
Indeed there were twins in her womb.”GENESIS 25:24
Yes, God’s Word was proven true once again! There were twins! How Rebekah must have rejoiced as she recalled what God had said about the twins. They would one day become two nations… two peoples!
UN-IDENTICAL TWINS!
God had not only said that Rebekah would have twins, He also intimated that they would be un-identical. How accurate were these words?
“And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over;
So they called his name Esau (hairy). Afterward his brother came
out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so his name was called
Jacob (“one who grabs the heel”). Isaac was sixty years old
when she bore them.”GENESIS 25:25-26
A TWENTY-YEAR WAIT FOR THE BIRTH OF THE TWINS
Isaac was married at 40 years of age (Genesis 25:20). He was sixty when he became the proud father of twin sons! His faith did not falter all this while! Both Isaac and Rebekah sought the Lord in prayer concerning the question of issue! God had graciously heard and answered their prayers!
DID ABRAHAM SEE HIS GRANDCHILDREN?
Though the Scriptures did not make any specific mention of Abraham spending time with his grandchildren, he must have seen them! Abraham’s life span of 175 years saw him watching his grandchildren grow up to be teenagers. Isaac was 75 years old when his father passed away! Abraham would thus have seen with his own eyes God fulfilling His word that He would indeed continue to watch over his descendants! He must have been glad that he had come to believe in this great God, the Possessor of heaven and earth!
THE NAMING OF THE TWINS
Isaac (laughter) was given his name because his mother Sarah laughed in disbelief. The hairy first-born was called “Esau”. That seemed a most natural name for he was hairy! The second twin was called “Jacob” he had grabbed his brother’s heel as he emerged from his mother’s womb! Each name carried with it deep symbolic significance!
