Text: Genesis 24 : 1 - 67
THE FINAL WORD
Eliezer was quietly insistent that he be allowed to return to Abraham immediately. The request seemed too urgent for the family’s liking, and so the request was denied initially. The trusty old servant of Abraham asked why there was any need to delay, since everything had been so blessed by the Lord! His logic was difficult to refute. His faith in God was even more difficult to refuse!
Finally, the family decided that Rebekah ought to be given the privilege of making the final decision. Surely, Eliezer would not object if Rebekah decided that she wanted to stay a few more days with her family? All the family must have felt quite confident that Rebekah would choose to stay a few days’ longer!
“So they said,
‘We will call the young woman and ask her personally.’
Then they called Rebekah and said to her, ‘Will you go
with this man?’ And she said, ‘I will go.'”GENESIS 24:57-58
How Rebekah must have surprised everybody in the family with her decision! She too must have been convinced that the hand of the Lord was upon her life. If that was the case, why would she need to delay? Even if there was a delay of ten days, that would not make the final parting any less emotional! Showing a great sense of firm practical-mindedness, Rebekah decided that she would return with Eliezer immediately.
GOOD WISHES FROM THE FAMILY
The family had deferred to Rebekah for the final word. They must now abide by what they had said. No matter how much the family would miss Rebekah, respect for her decision must be upheld.
“So they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse,
and Abraham’s servant and his men. And they blessed Rebekah
and said to her:
‘Our sister, may you become
The mother of thousands of ten thousands;
And may your descendants possess
The gates of those who hate them.'”GENESIS 24:59-60
1. With Posterity in Mind
The blessing of the family must not of course be taken in the wooden literal sense. The idea behind their words is similar to God’s promise of blessing given to Abraham. May their posterity be blessed!
2. Triumphant Always!
Difficulties in life were to be expected! However, with the Lord’s blessings, may there always be triumph over all enemies!
