Day 159

"You crown the year with Your goodness, And Your paths drip with abundance." Psalm 65:11

Text: Genesis 24 : 1 - 67

SPONTANEOUS WORSHIP AGAIN

Eliezer was a godly man indeed! Once again, he recognized God’s hand in the reply that Bethuel gave! What would be the most appropriate response? To Eliezer, spontaneous worship was the most appropriate response.

“And it came to pass, when Abraham’s servant heard their words,
That he worshipped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth.”

GENESIS 24:52

Unashamed, and unafraid to give expression of his faith in God, Eliezer prostrated himself to the ground, before the presence of Bethuel and his family! How could he not worship this great God who had blessed his journey with such success?

A JOYOUS CELEBRATION

After this short worship of the Lord, Eliezer brought forth wonderful gifts to be presented to the family! This was cause for celebration indeed.

“Then the servant brought out jewelry of silver, jewelry of gold,
and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious
things to her brother and to her mother.
And he and the men who were with him ate and drank and stayed
all night.”

GENESIS 24:53-54

1. More gifts to Rebekah

The presents given to Rebekah, the nose ring and the golden bracelets paled in comparison to the other gifts that Eliezer now presented to her! There were items of both silver and gold, and clothing too!

2. Gifts to other members of the family

Eliezer brought 10 camels with him! He had anticipated success, despite his initial doubts! These gifts had been specially prepared! Laban and Rebekah’s mother were also given gifts! Those gifts were described as “precious things”. They must have cost a pretty penny!

3. Enjoyment of refreshment

The occasion was festive. It may well be described as a wedding feast, minus the presence of the groom! Eliezer and his fellow-servants and of course members of the family stayed up all night to enjoy the occasion! The food that had been presented earlier could now be fully enjoyed – after Eliezer had fulfilled the assignment that Abraham had sent him to attempt and to accomplish!

What a great sense of responsibility Eliezer had! His faith in the God of Abraham must have been deeply strengthened through this experience! How glad he must have felt in his heart to know and to worship the Lord God of Abraham, his master!
