Genesis

Day 157

"Blessed is the man You choose, And cause to approach You, That he may dwell in your courts. We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house…" Psalm 65:4

Text: Genesis 24 : 1 - 67

A SERVANT’S HUMBLE PRAYER

Eliezer never spoke of his faith as being on the same level as his master, Abraham, at any time. Nevertheless, he could and did speak of his personal faith in God. This was evident in the prayer preserved in the following text.

“And this day I came to the well and said, ‘O Lord God
of my master Abraham, if You will now prosper the way
in which I go, behold, I stand by the well of water; and
it shall come to pass that when the virgin comes out to
draw water, and I say to her, “Please give me a little water
from your pitcher to drink,” and she says to me, “Drink,’
and I will draw for your camels also,” – let her be
the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’ son.'”

GENESIS 24:42-44

1. A personal plea to the God of Abraham

Eliezer certainly had personal faith in the Lord. His heartfelt prayer would prove that he possessed the same faith that his master possessed!

2. Making a special request

Though Abraham gave quite clear instructions concerning the ethnicity of the bride, he did not, nor indeed could he do so, give further instructions to Rebekah. What kind of a bride Isaac would have now depended on the person Eliezer would choose! The elements of his prayer include the following:-

a) That the prospective bride be a virgin.

b) That the woman he chose would be kind-hearted.

c) That the woman would also be hard-working!

GOD’S GRACIOUS REPLY

Bringing the family up to speed, Eliezer spoke of how he met Rebekah at the well.

“But before I had finished speaking in my heart,
there was Rebekah, coming out with her pitcher on her shoulder,
and she went down to the well and draw water…”

GENESIS 24:45

Rebekah fulfilled all the elements of Eliezer’s prayer! But of course Eliezer spoke of how he offered spontaneous worship there and then. This great God of Abraham did not fail to bless!

“And I bowed my head and worshipped the Lord,
and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham,
who had led me in the way of truth…”
