Day 155

"All men shall fear, And shall declare the work of God; For they shall wisely consider His doing." Psalm 64:9

Text: Genesis 24 : 1 - 67

EVIDENT BLESSINGS OF THE LORD

The Lord’s blessings upon Abraham were very real and obvious. Though material blessings are by no means the most wonderful of His expressions, they are the most obvious. Eliezer was not boasting of his master’s wealth, when he described the obvious wealth of Abraham! Three things were highlighted!

1. Livestock

Livestock – flocks, herds, camels, and donkeys were tell-tale signs of a person’s wealth!

2. Silver and gold

From the earliest times, silver and gold were prized. They were even more significant in the ancient days, because these precious metals were so rare!

3. Servants

Abraham had over 318 male servants who formed his own private army (Cf. Genesis 14:14). We are told that Abraham also had “female servants” (Genesis 24:35). Only a person of substantial wealth can speak of having so many servants!

A SPECIAL BLESSING

Eliezer did not only speak of the Lord’s blessings on Abraham! He also took time to introduce Isaac, his young master!

1. A special gift from the Lord

There was no way to explain the birth of Isaac, except to see him as a special gift from God. Eliezer noted that Sarah “bore a son to (his) master when she was old” (Genesis 24:36).

2. Isaac the heir

Isaac was the heir of Abraham’s fortune! He would stand to inherit everything that his father possessed!

ELIEZER’S MISSION

At last, Eliezer came to the mission that his master Abraham had entrusted him with.

“Now my master made me swear, saying,
‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters
Of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell…'”

GENESIS 24:37

Eliezer had been entrusted with the task of looking for a bride for Isaac! But all the daughters of the Canaanites were completely ruled out right from the start! With these opening words, Eliezer began to speak about what he was doing in Mesopotamia!
