Text: Genesis 22:1-24
DISCOVERED KNOWLEDGE OF GOD
Abraham discovered many things about the Lord over the years. Let us take time to review what he had learned about God thus far.
1. The LORD – Genesis 12:7-8; 13:4
God was known as LORD to him. The power and authority of this God was compelling indeed! Abraham sought to obey the LORD as best he could.
2. God Most High, Possessor of Heaven and Earth – Genesis 14:19, 22
From Melchizedek Abraham learned to call the Lord, “God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth”. He used this name to speak to the king of Sodom (Cf. Genesis 14:22-24).
3. Judge of all the Earth – Genesis 18:25
As Abraham pleaded with the Lord on behalf of Sodom, he called Him “The Judge of all the earth”. He discovered that this Judge of all the earth was open to intercessory prayer! He would listen patiently and would take into consideration all that is offered in humble prayer to Him.
4. The Everlasting God – Genesis 21:33
At Beersheba, over the dispute of a well with Abimelech, Abraham called the Lord, “The Everlasting God”. This God who does not change with the passing of time continued to watch over him most faithfully!
5. The-LORD-Will-Provide Genesis 22:14
At Mount Moriah, Abraham discovered another piece of knowledge about God. What a precious piece of knowledge this was!
“And Abraham called the name of the place,
The Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day,
‘In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.'”GENESIS 22:14
This was another way of addressing the Lord! Abraham now had at least five ways in which he could call upon the Lord. Each name revealed a special attribute of God, and every piece of knowledge strengthened his faith in Him!
WORSHIP IS MOST MEANINGFUL
Worship of the Lord, as far as Abraham was concerned, was most personal in nature. There weren’t too many people with whom he could share worship! Personal worship need not be insignificant or unimportant! To Abraham, each worship represented an opportunity to express his heartfelt gratitude that he had discovered yet another aspect of this Person he had initially simply called “The LORD”.
