"Salvation belongs to the Lord. Your blessing is upon Your people." Psalm 3:8

Text: Genesis 12:1-20

BLESSINGS REVEAL MUCH ABOUT GOD AND HIS PLANS

When God spoke to Abram and promised him great and mighty blessings, He revealed much about Himself, and about His plans!

1. THINGS REVEALED ABOUT GOD

a) God loves the individual

This is an awesome truth to ponder over. From what we have read in the book of Genesis thus far, we see God relating to mankind in the most personal of ways. He singles out individuals for special blessings. Ponder over how He related to Adam, to Enoch, to Noah and now to Abram!

b) God loves to communicate His thoughts (and His blessings)

God is not unknowable! He reveals Himself to those who have faith in Him. He shares deep and wonderful thoughts with those who truly desire to walk with Him!

c) God patiently teaches those who love Him

One of the most striking truths that moves the heart is the fact that God actually takes the time to carefully instruct those He blesses. Abram did not have a set of Scriptures to read. However, he seemed to know what God wanted of him. God had instructed him well!

2. THINGS REVEALED ABOUT HIS PLANS

a) God reveals His plans in stages

In His great wisdom, God revealed His plans to Abram a bit at a time. Everything was carefully staged.

b) God will test the individual’s response before revealing His plans further

At each word of revelation that God gives, He will test how a person will respond to it. If there is a good, positive and appropriate response, He will move to the next stage. If there is poor and inappropriate response, He will repeat the lesson He taught earlier.

c) God’s focus is on Eternal Matters

Sometimes we forget that God’s thoughts are much higher than ours. Sometimes we mistake the point of His blessings. It is important that we remember that God’s focus is never on things mundane alone. His focus is on eternal matters!

A HUMBLING THOUGHT!

It is wonderful to know that God would bless us at all! We certainly do not deserve any of His blessings, let alone the promises recorded in the Scriptures! Let us always read every promise of blessing with a deep sense of humility. Let us always stand in awe of the fact that God wishes to relate to us at all! May we learn deep lessons of how to respond to the Lord’s word as Abraham did.
