Genesis
Day
Day 41

"Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him." Psalm 33:8

Text: Genesis 10:1-32

ORIGIN OF THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD

Another attempt was made to keep track of the genealogical history of mankind. This time the focus was on the sons of Noah.

“Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham
and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood.”

GENESIS 10:1

“These were the families of the sons of Noah, according
To their generations, in their nations, and from these the nations
were divided on the earth after the flood.”

GENESIS 10:32

AN INTERESTING QUESTION

Who was the eldest? Who was the youngest? The answer may be found in the following texts.

“So Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his younger son
had done to him…”

GENESIS 9:24

The word “younger” is a comparative adjective. With whom was he compared? The text we now need to look at describes Japheth. He is called:

“Japheth the elder…”

GENESIS 10:21

It would appear that Shem was the eldest of the three sons. Japheth would be in the middle while Ham would be the youngest.

A GLIMPSE AT THE GENEALOGICAL RECORD OF NOAH’S SONS

Let us consider the following texts. These concern the family lines of the three sons of Noah. From a single family unit, each had grown to become “a nation”.

1. With reference to Japheth

“From these the coastland peoples of the Gentiles were
separated into their lands, everyone according to his language,
according to their families, into the nations.”

GENESIS 10:5

2. With reference to Ham

“These were the sons of Ham, according to their families,
according to their languages, in their lands and in their nations.”

GENESIS 10:20

3. With reference to Shem

“These were the sons of Shem, according to their families,
according to their languages, in their lands, according
to their nations.”

GENESIS 10:31
