"The just shall live by faith."

Text: Galatians 3:11b

THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH

Paul went on to cite an important theological truth that he expounded and defended in the preaching of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. In summary it is stated here most succinctly.

The just shall live by faith.

Galatians 3:11b

1. A famous statement

a) This statement is taken from Habakkuk’s book (Habakkuk 2:4c).
b) The context of Habakkuk’s statement (Habakkuk 2:4).
i) The proud and the just are contrasted.
ii) The proud is another way of describing the wicked.
iii) There is no uprightness in the soul of the wicked.
iv) The just on the other hand live by his faith in God.

2. Who are “the just”

a) They are the ones who are justified by God.
b) They stand in the presence of God as people who are justified.
c) God has declared them righteous.

3. Justified by faith

a) Faith enables a person to stand justified before God.
b) As Abraham was justified by faith so all who have faith may be justified.

4. “Live by faith”

a) This is logical.
i) We begin with faith.
ii) We continue with faith.
b) This is necessary.
i) God declares this.
ii) We are to be challenged to live by faith.
c) This is appropriate.
d) This is truly wise.
