" Therefore know..."

Text: Galatians 3:6-7


There is a strong tie up between the two verses (Galatians 3:6-7). The construction of the two verses links the thoughts together. The connection must be noted.

Just as Abraham ‘believed God, and it was accounted
to him for righteousness.’
Therefore know that only those who are of faith are
sons of Abraham.

Galatians 3:6-7

1. “Just as… therefore” (Greek… Kathos… ara)

a) There is a strong sense of connection.
b) The following lines of connection may be noted.
i) Grammatical connection
ii) Logical connection
iii) Theological connection
iv) Spiritual connection

2. “Therefore know”

a) This theological knowledge is of vital significance.
b) Faith must be based on knowledge.
i) Biblical knowledge
ii) Theological truth
c) On the basis of this knowledge true faith is to be found.

3. “Only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham”

a) The claims of the Judaizers.
i) Sonship is limited to the stock of Israel.
ii) This sonship is confirmed through the keeping of the law.
b) The argument of the apostle Paul.
i) Only those who have faith as Abraham can speak of true sonship.
ii) Ethnic descent does not confer the right of sonship.
iii) Faith in God brings about justification.
iv) Faith in God results in God conferring sonship to all who possess genuine faith.
