Day 20

"Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas..."

Text: Galatians 2:1

ANOTHER VISIT TO JERUSALEM

Paul’s visits to Jerusalem were infrequent. He recalled another visit to Jerusalem.

Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem
with Barnabas, and also took Titus with me.
And I went up by revelation, and communicated to them
that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles,
but privately to those who were of reputation, lest by
any means I might run, or had run, in vain.
Yet not even Titus who was with me,
being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.

Galatians 2:1-3

1. “Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem”

a) This is most likely a reference to the Jerusalem Council.
b) This meeting was noted in Acts 15:22.
c) However, the name of Titus was not mentioned.
d) This can be easily explained.
i) Only the leading men were mentioned (Acts 15:22).
ii) Titus was not a leading man at that time (Acts 15:22).

2. “And I went up by revelation, and communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles”

a) Paul was led by the Spirit of God to meet up privately with those who were of reputation.
b) These would be mostly likely be:-
i) The apostles (Acts 15:6)
ii) The elders (Acts 15:6)

3. “Titus”

a) He was a Greek (a Gentile).
b) He was not circumcised.
c) He was not compelled to be circumcised by the apostles and elders of the church in Jerusalem.
d) This was significant:-
i) The rite of circumcision was never imposed on Gentile believers.
ii) This strictly Jewish rite was confined to Jews (and Jewish Christians).
iii) Circumcision was never part of the gospel message.
