Day 16

"Called me through His grace."

Text: Galatians 1:15

A DIVINE CALLING

Why had Paul become a bondservant of the Lord Jesus Christ? His answer was explained in a compelling manner.

But when it pleased God, who separated
me from my mother’s womb and called me
through His grace.

Galatians 1:15

1. “It pleased God”

a) This is a typical Pauline expression (Ephesians 1:9; Colossians 1:10).
b) It was God’s delight to choose Paul.
c) Exactly why it was God’s pleasure to choose Paul is not fully explained. (Perhaps it is impossible to explain this profound thought.)

2. “Who separated me from my mother’s womb”

a) Paul traces His calling to the time of his birth.
b) The language used here resembles God’s word to Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:5).
c) Significance of this statement.
i) God’s plans are profound.
ii) They are considered long before a person is born.
iii) They will find fulfilment in due time.
iv) They should cause a person to feel a great sense of awe and wonder.

3. “And called me through His grace”

a) Paul had a divine calling from God.
b) This calling was out of the abundance of God’s grace.
c) Paul did not take any glory concerning what he achieved in his life.
d) He was merely fulfilling what God had called him to do.

4. Appropriate response

a) To be God’s bondservant.
b) To preach the gospel faithfully.
c) To defend the integrity of the gospel.
d) To battle false teachers.
