"The law of the Spirit of life..."

Text: Romans 8:2

THE LAW

In the New Testament era, whenever the word “law” is mentioned, one thinks of “the law of Moses”. To the Jewish community the word “law” represents many things:

1. The word of God

2. Authority

3. The way of life

THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT

The Apostle Paul used the same word “law” with reference to the ministry of the Holy Spirit. And this has huge significance!

“There is therefore now no condemnation
to those who are in Christ Jesus,
who do not walk according to the flesh,
but according to the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus
has made me free from the law of sin and death.”
Romans 8:1-2

1. Understanding the connection

a) The law of Moses
i) No one is able to keep the law of Moses perfectly.
ii) Thus it leads to condemnation according to the penalty of the law.
b) The law of sin and death
i) The law informs us that we are all guilty of sin (Romans 3:23).
ii) And we stand in danger of being adjudged worthy of death (Romans 6:23).
c) The law of the Spirit
i) This leads to life.
ii) This leads to freedom from condemnation.

2. Christ Jesus

a) His role is central.
b) He offers life eternal through faith in Him.
c) He took our guilt and our punishment upon Himself.
d) Thus, He is able to offer freedom and eternal life.

3. Walking in the Spirit

The true believer must desire to walk in the Spirit and not according to the flesh.
