"Walk in the Spirit..."

Text: Galatians 5:16

LEARNING TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT

One of the most challenging things to do as true believers in the Lord Jesus Christ is to learn what it means to be His disciples. Effective discipleship always involves the Holy Spirit.

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh;
and these are contrary to one another,
so that you do not do the things that you wish.
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
Galatians 5:16-18

1. The flesh and the Spirit

a) They are sharply contrasted.
b) The challenge is to learn how to “walk in the Spirit”.

2. The battle between the flesh and the Spirit

a) The flesh will always militate against the Spirit of God.
b) They are diametrically opposite of each other.

3. The things you wish

a) There are many things we may wish to do (if we truly belong to the Lord).
i) We will desire to pray.
ii) We will desire to know the Lord better.
iii) We will desire to walk with the Lord.
iv) We will desire to serve Him faithfully.
b) But if the flesh prevails against the Spirit.
i) Our desires will wane.
ii) We will not walk with the Lord consistently.
iii) We will not grow stronger but end up being weak.

4. The great challenge

a) To walk with the Spirit.
b) To be led by the Spirit.
c) Then we will be able to better comprehend what it means not to be under the law.
d) We will be able to live by the grace of God significantly.
