"But one and the same Spirit..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 12:11

THE INVOLVEMENT OF THE TRIUNE GODHEAD

The Triune Godhead is involved in the administration of gifts. The following texts bear up this truth.

1. The role of God the Father

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,
and comes down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”
James 1:17

2. The role of the Lord Jesus Christ

“But to each one of us grace was given
according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
Therefore He says,
‘When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive,
and gave gifts to men.'”
Ephesians 4:7-8

3. The role of the Holy Spirit

“But one and the same Spirit works all these things,
distributing to each one individually as He wills.”
1 Corinthians 12:11

FOCUS ON THE ROLE OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

The Apostle Paul focused his attention on the role of the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12 because of the misunderstanding of many in Corinth.

1. Perfect harmony

a) There is perfect harmony in The Triune Godhead.
b) In the dispensation of things: –
i) The Lord Jesus Christ as the Victor is able to give gifts.
ii) The Spirit of God is the One through whom/by whom the gifts are distributed.

2. “One and the same Spirit”

a) All gifts from the Father or the Son are administered by the Spirit of God.
b) The prerogative to give:
i) It belongs to God inherently.
ii) It belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ because all things have been given to Him by the Father.
c) The role of the Holy Spirit:
i) His role was already taught by the Lord Jesus Christ (John 14-16).
ii) His role is highlighted in this text (1 Corinthians 12:6-11).
iii) He has full authority to distribute spiritual gifts as He deems fit.
iv) He is the One who makes these gifts work.
v) The gifts cannot function by themselves. They need the empowering work of the Holy Spirit.
vi) The Spirit of God has the necessary Divine power to administer the gifts as He sees fit.
