"The Spirit also helps in our weaknesses."

Text: Romans 8:26

HUMAN WEAKNESSES

If we are candid and honest with ourselves, we will have to admit that we have many human weaknesses. This is a reality that cannot be denied.

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses.
For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought,
but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us
with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
Romans 8:26

1. “Likewise”

a) It is interesting to ask why Paul added this adverb.
b) There must be a reference somewhere to “help” (even though this was not specifically stated).
c) Possible references:-
i) Help from our faith in God.
ii) Help from fellow-believers.

2. “Likewise the Spirit also helps us in our weaknesses”

a) This is an important truth to take note of.
b) We can count on an extra bit of help!
c) Other sources of help are acknowledged.
d) The Spirit “likewise” comes alongside to aid us.

3. In the area of prayer specifically

a) We often assume we know what we ought to pray for.
b) Paul suggests otherwise.
i) Many times we do not know what we ought to pray for.
ii) Because of our human limitations we often struggle with our prayer efforts.

4. “The Spirit Himself makes intercession for us”

a) This does not mean we do not need to pray.
b) The Spirit comes alongside and prays for us knowing how we struggle in prayer.

5. “With groanings which cannot be uttered”

a) This is suggestive of the depth of prayer the Spirit makes on our behalf.
b) How He prays and what He prays for us is not disclosed to us.
c) Our part is to deeply appreciate that the Spirit of God would intercede for us at all.
