"I will establish one shepherd over them"

Text: Ezekiel 34:23

THE MESSIANIC DAVID

The Lord gave to His flock a special word of promise. This may be called a Messianic hope. The Messiah would be that special Shepherd of His flock.

“I will establish one shepherd over them,
and he shall feed them—My servant David.
He shall feed them and be their shepherd.
And I, the Lord, will be their God,
and My servant David a prince among them;
I, the Lord, have spoken.”
Ezekiel 34:23-24

1. The monarchical system of ancient Israel.

a) Israel had demanded a king to lead the nation.

b) King Saul was the first king of Israel but he failed miserably.

c) David became the next king of Israel and under his reign, Israel became very strong.

d) The kingdom flourished under Solomon until his heart became corrupt.

e) In the reign of King Rehoboam, the Kingdom of Israel was divided.

f) Both Israel and Judah were conquered by the Assyrians and the Babylonians respectively.

2. Establishing of a Messianic kingdom.

a) God will establish the new kingdom.

b) He will be that One Shepherd for the flock of God.

c) He will come from the line of David.

d) This faithful Shepherd will feed His flock

e) He will succeed where all others have failed

3. The Lord’s role

a) He will be their God.

b) His servant David will be the Messianic Prince of Peace.

c) This was a glorious declaration of God with reference to the future of His flock.

4. The fulfilment of this prophecy.

a) The Lord Jesus is easily identified as that Shepherd (John 10).

b) He has done His part in laying His life down for the sheep.

c) We now await His return to establish the Messianic Kingdom.
