"He shall surely live"

Text: Ezekiel 33:16

A WARNING TO THE RIGHTEOUS

To live righteously should be in the heart and mind of the upright. But the righteous must be aware that he should not depart from righteousness to pursue the path of the wicked.

“When I say to the righteous that he shall surely live,
but he trusts in his own righteousness and commits iniquity,
none of his righteous works shall be remembered;
but because of the iniquity that he has committed, he shall die.”
Ezekiel 33:13

1. God’s blessings are promised to those who live righteously.

2. But should the righteous choose to live wickedly, he must know that the promised blessing of life can be withdrawn and he would die because of his iniquity.

HOPE FOR THE WICKED

On the other hand, if the wicked person decides to repent and he turns to the Lord for mercy to live righteously, he will be blessed.

“Again, when I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’
if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right,
if the wicked restores the pledge,
gives back what he has stolen,
and walks in the statutes of life without committing iniquity,
he shall surely live; he shall not die.
None of his sins which he has committed
shall be remembered against him;
he has done what is lawful and right; he shall surely live.”
Ezekiel 33:14-16

1. God’s warning to the wicked is given.
If he persists in wickedness, he will die!

2. But if he turns away from wickedness:

a) He restores the pledge of the borrower.

b) He returns what he has stolen.

c) He walks in the statutes of God which leads to life.

d) He will be spared from death.

e) God would grant him a reprieve and he will live.

f) All his past sins would not be remembered and held against him.

g) Because he has done what is right, he will live, by the mercy of God.
