"You have become defiled by their idols"

Text: Ezekiel 23:30

THE SIN OF IDOLATRY

Jerusalem was the capital of Judah politically. It was also the spiritual capital of the nation. The temple of the Lord was built in Jerusalem so that the people may relish and treasure their faith. But Judah had become defiled because of idolatry.

“I will do these things to you
because you have gone as a harlot after the Gentiles,
because you have become defiled by their idols.
You have walked in the way of your sister;
therefore I will put her cup in your hand.”
Ezekiel 23:30-31

1. Judah had become a harlot.

a) The nation had chosen the ways of the idolatrous Gentiles.

b) The Gentiles had not pursued Judah as much as the latter had chased after idolatry.

2. What were the areas defiled?

a) Her thoughts were corrupted.

b) Her heart was hardened.

c) Her ways were stubbornly set.

d) Her spirit was alienated from God.

e) Idolatry had become entrenched.

f) Foolish thinking was deemed to be wise.

3. The way of her sister Israel.

a) Israel was led into idolatry by Jeroboam I.

b) He offered golden calves as the deities of the nation.

c) Israel perished along the way.

d) Judah had not learned from the errors of Israel.

e) She had adopted the idolatrous ways of Israel.

f) She was also headed to destruction.

g) She too would drink the bitter cup of punishment from the Lord.
